Reliable control also lets a crew return later and reset any stakes that get disturbed, using the same reference framework.
Offset stakes protect the work. A stake placed directly on a building corner or a pipe centerline is usually destroyed the moment excavation begins. To solve this, surveyors set offset stakes a measured distance to the side of the true line. The offset distance and the information needed to find the actual point are marked on the stake, so the contractor can re-establish the exact location after the ground is disturbed.
